Ferry and Tours to Scattery Island, West Clare
Located just off Kilrush in Co. Clare, Scattery Island is truly a unique visitor experience on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
Visitors to the island are amazed at the wealth of historic sites, which includes five Churches, a Cathedral, a magnificent Round Tower, a Napoleonic War Artillery Battery and a working Lighthouse. The island is completely uninhabited, and you can explore its ancient historic sites and experience its unspoilt natural beauty in peace and tranquillity.
Scattery Island Tour
This one hour guided walking tour will take you around the monastic site as well as the far end of the island where the battery and lighthouse are located.
The tour begins at the Kilrush Marina, and this short sailing adventure takes you past the picturesque village of Cappa and the smaller Hog Island.
Once you are on the island, the OPW tour guide will take you on the walking tour of the monastic sites, where you will learn about St. Senan’s battle against the serpent Cathagh and his creation of the monastic settlement dating back to the early fifth century.

The Great Island Experience
This tour begins at Kilrush Marina and takes you past the village of Cappa and the smaller Hog Island. Just beyond this, Scattery’s round tower and cottages come into view. Once on the island, the OPW guide will take you on your walking tour where you will learn about the fascinating history this little island holds from the early monastic times right through to the last of the islanders who inhabited Scattery.
At the end of your tour, visit the island exhibition at the visitor centre and soak up the pier-side views back to the mainland of Kerry and Clare as you enjoy your lunch at one of the available picnic tables.
After lunch, begin your journey across to the southern end of the island, where you can find the lighthouse and battery. Your audio tour will guide you by Old Street, where the last of the islanders lived, then onto the lighthouse, and finally the Napoleonic artillery battery.
